The Grand City Tour Panama
Your Panama City Tour begins when we pick you up at the Tocumen International Airport (PTY) at Albrook Airport – Marcos A. Gelabert or at selected hotels in the center of the city.
Traveling from the airport we´ll get and impressive view of Panama´s Urban Modernism with enormous Skyscrapers, sophisticated commercial centers and condominium complexes.
Part of the journey from the airport is traveled on a highway that includes several miles over the ocean. It is known as the Southern Corridor.
If your tour departs from your hotel, we´ll meet you in the lobby where your guide will begin his presentation with a description of the area in which your hotel is located.
To note is the fact that the City of Panama was the first city founded by the Spaniards on this section of the Pacific Coast on the 15th of August 1519.
We´ll be touring the most modern city in Latin America, with its giant skyscrapers, coastal zones and spectacular boardwalk area comprised of more than 66 hectares of extension taken entirely from the sea.
This prominent landfill was constructed from the earth removed from the recent amplification of the canal.
There you will find abundant open plazas, parks, bike paths, roller-skate and skateboard parks and even a new soccer stadium, known as The Maracana with a capacity of 5 thousand spectators (a miniature replica of the Brazilian Stadium) and dozens of acres of unobstructed open air space.
We´ll be visiting the historic district where you´ll be able to take photographs, walk through the old colonial city that almost resembles a museum for its historic architecture complete with colonial era, churches, narrow cobblestone streets and alleyways, theaters, houses and commercial buildings of the colonial era.
The district was built around 1673 and declared by UNESCO to be the historic and cultural patrimony in 1997.
At night the Historic District (Old Town), vibrates with life and becomes a reference for entertainment within the City of Panama. There we´ll find dozens of bars discotheques, open air cafes, restaurants for all tastes and budgets , as well as souvenir shops where you can obtain the famous Panama Hat or Typical “Pintao” hat of Panama, has also been declared world cultural humanity patrimony.
We continue to the Amador Causeway, known as “The Causeway”; a scenic coastal marine freeway linking three islands, Noas, Perico, Flamenco. These tropical touristic islands are connected via a modern hiway constructed the same way as with the islands, from the solid material originally removed to excavate the Canal.
Today the islands provide and ideal location for walking, bike riding, skating or simply sitting down on the inviting grass to relax and watch as the ships enter and leave the Panama Canal.
Who could pass up the opportunity to enjoy a delicious “Ceviche” as you watch the sunset into the horizon?
In April of 2017 The Causeway was re-inaugurated with its recently completed enlargement constructed using the material removed from the canal recent modernization.
The views from The Causeway, back towards the city of Panama are hallucinating. Within sight are the opulent residential zones of Paitilla, Balboas Avenue, Punta Pacifica and Costa del Este. From the Causeway you can clearly observe not only the Pacific Ocean entrance to the Canal, but also the majestic Americas Bridge.
Without doubt the Amador Causeway is one of the preferred locations to visit the City of Panama.
The Americas Bridge connects, not only the City of Panama, with the rest of the country, but also South America with the rest of Central and North America by crossing over the Canal itself. Depending upon the time available, we´ll be crossing over the Canal on the bridge to allow you the unique experience of joining two continents.
During the Panama City Tour, you´ll also appreciate the opportunity to witness the operation of the Canal as we´ll be taking you to the Panama Canal Visitors Center at the Miraflores Locks.
Miraflores Locks
On the Miraflores Locks you´ll be able to observe exactly how the locks function and just how huge are the ships that pass through them. From the observation decks available you´ll see just how the ships are raised up above sea level or lowered back down to sea level depending upon the direction of travel od each ship either north or south through the canal. As well, from the observation decks you´ll watch as the enormous ships are trapped by the huge freshwater lock´s chambers allowing them to continue their journeys through the rest of the Canal and on to the other coast.
The visitor center also offers special galleries provided to teach you about the history of the Canal. You´ll be free to tour the different halls and the canal museum with exhibition throughout the visit, you will as well have the opportunity to learn about the construction and function of this mega work of engineering genius.
In one of the halls you´ll find a 3D simulator, here you´ll experience the feel of sitting in the captain’s chair, piloting the ship through the canal. Truly and experience you find no other place in the world.
This fascinating adventure through the City of Panama will take you to lots more sights filled with history and scenic beauty.
